shocker

Well to day I did get a bit of a shock. Me, Wiz, Shield, Recon, and a few pubs on TG#1. Between maps Shield tells Wiz he’s in vialation of the Code of Honor.

Wiz got promoted to Troop Captain, a fine thing 🙂
He’s our web master, keeps the site going, good SNCO for as long as I’ve known’em. Maybe as close to a mentor I’ve had in [SAS]. Its always good when friends got promoted hehehe.

Next map. Shield tells me I am breaking CoH too, tells me I have Wiz’s old Rank (sgt). So I tag up after bumblers moement. A min later Shield says he made a Mistake, I’m not a Sgt I’m SSM.

I miss read SSM as RSM, since we have not had any SSM in awhile. Kinda embarrasing on X-Fire for a minute. When I re-read Shields msg and saw the first S and corrected it. I was never so happy to be promoted ! lol. Wew…

Turns out my m8 Rasa is also a SSM and our mutual team mate Rouge is acting RSM. Really, I was hoping they’d just promote Rouge to Sgt and let us Cpl have a good leader. Damn I’m glad they picked Rouge. Not that I have issues but, hes the best and I’m actually glad we all skipped regular sgt. I’ve always looked at the higher ranksk with respect, first time I met Shield. This was before he was CO, prolly Major or an SNCO. I called him Sir. Being the sort he is, of course he didn’t like the ‘sir’ part.

Even though, I have a lot of respect for our officers and every member. To be honest, I’ve always looked on the ‘Sgt’ rank as sort of a death curse. Since Wiz made Sgt way back when, I noticed how his activity dropped. Not to mention JB, Blade e.t.c. This is why after Cpl, I stopped sending promo-suggestions. Being where we are now I’m happy. I was some what fearing promotion actually.

To be honest, for a long time I’ve always wrestled with the idea of leaving. Even when I was a P.R. But, when I was a P.R. I had such joy and I desided I wanted to continue on to the Selection Course in the hopes of some day passing on what I learned. My time in the [SAS] has really been a blessing to me, in numerous ways really. As a trp I trained my self to a razors edge, as a LCpl I floundered (imho). I remember being told that it was a Sgts job for such things, never have really wanted to have rank. Well, I did always have a soft spot for Cpl. Thanks to Adze, Wiz, JB, and Blade. I remember when I was just a newbie Adze was always popping in/out. That bloody Cpl was inspiring slash annoying. Being a Cpl, really was the highest I wanted to go. Just high enough to be free to get involved in training/clan matters but low enough to be sure I’d spend a lot of time with the server, public, and members.

Really what good is a job if you don’t get to be with your friends and meet new people ? At least as an SSM I know I can still be where I want, yet still be useful to the team. The happiest thing they could have ever given me for a Rank they did. Trooper when I passed my second tryout with a 98%. Any thing after thats kinda gravy as long as I can be useful.

So what is my new Job Description?

/****************************
The Squadron Sergeant Major, working closely with the Regiment Sergeant Major, will be expected to make suggestions regarding our [SAS] member training procedures, and implement any necessary changes upon approval of the Captain. The Squadron Sergeant Major must ensure that all Staff Sergeants are correctly educating the [SAS] membership and Sergeants are correctly educating prospective members on all aspects of the [SAS] Code of Honor and Standard Operating Procedure Training.

The Squadron Sergeant Major will report directly to the Regiment Sergeant Major about their training methods and scheduling, but he is allowed to, when necessary, act independently to provide supplemental training to the [SAS] membership.

The Squadron Sergeant Major is responsible for administering the Advanced Training Awards Tryout to selected [SAS] members. Eligibility to participate in the ATA Tryout is determined by the SSM. In situations where the SSM is not able, due to logistical reasons, to administer the ATA, the RSM or a qualified trainer shall act as a replacement for that instance.
************************/

The ATA part is a bit dated since the one fearsome training map for it. Has been released for general training, I use it often. But other wise the JD looks ’bout ripe. Speaking of ATAs the only person to come close or actualyl did do it on the first (can’t remeber which) was Random when he was CO. I take my helmet off to ye for that !

Great map for self-training though heheehe.

Live Op #5

My 5th live oop, a failure but a well done one.

Hexen made the map, Miles ran the op. Very good although I think it was morea job for Rainbow then the SAS 🙂

Profesional Tangos took over the bang, at least 3 hostages or more. All presumed in the upper conference room. GSG9 called in to storm it, mission failed. Hostage takers issued demands, SAS called in. Sniper support with eyes on Obj. Team:

Red One: SAS_LCpl_Leon
Red Two: SAS_Sgt_Wiz
Gold: SAS_Cpl_Spidey01 (EL)
Blue Two: SAS_Trp_Fox (2IC)
Blue One: SAS_Cpl_Rasa

Rifle-One: GSG9_Bones (SAS_Trp_Miles) on special loan from the locals for Sniper/Intel support.

I assigned the callsigns/formations since they elected me EL while I was away. With mostly the help of Fox and Rasa I sorted our plan of action. We would enter threw the side door of the [SAS]_Banking_House map. Clear the area and drop gas at the ends of the hall. Move up stairs, Red One and Red Two button hooking, slicing pies and dropping a gas on the risky side. Blue Two placing a charge while Blue One would cover me to clear to back rooms. As Red Team got in position on the other side of the Obj. I’d high tail around, place a C2 on the door while Red and Blow readied. I’d rejoin Blue Team and give the GO.

My charge would blow the far door from us open. Foxes Charge would blow our door. Wiz and Rasa would chuck in flashbangs to cover the room. While Bones (Miles) would snipe. Like this

Sniper

R1 = Red One B1 = Blue One
R2 = Red Two B2 = Blue Two
G = Gold C = Charge
b = Bang D = Door
W = Window

Red would bang and button hook Snipers-left, Blue would Breach Bang and button hook Snipers-right. I would blast the first charge (deversionary entry) and kick in the door to the adjacent room to take care of any threat to Blue, risky but clock work. No one would be in any ones line of fire, well maybe the hostages but you can’t help that.

Every one would give a clear, Fox (B2) would nab the hostages and I’d set up in the hallway and call a reform. If there was less then 3 hostages, B1 the Rear Guard (Rasa) would guard the hostages while Rifle-One covered with a sniper rifle and hide in a secure room near by. R1, R2, G, B2 would form up and move out going door-to-door-to-door bang by bang trying to clear the remaining (other half) of the upstairs as quickly and as safe as possible. We couldn’t be sure if their would be hostages in the other areas and we couldn’t risk the known hostages for them. If we whent precision clearing RvS style with no tacaids we would loose a hostage and compromise the mission. So any one out there had to sit tight.

If at least three hostages were there, we’d grab them and huzzle out to Exfil. Take a sec to catch our breath then start systematicly clearing the buildings other half till we got the other hostage(s).

Sounds great eh? Especially since we couldn’t have long sticks /w bangs to flash the windows or bang/breach & repel threw the things from the roof like IRL. All whent well till we got in side on the stairs. A door open at 12, hostage sighted and ran for us. Door to the target open at 3 (to hostage room) and tangos coming our way. Rasa got shot and he was the Rear Guard, then the hostage got shot. Some times life just tosses you a ball that smacks you in the head, can’t catch it.

Was a very good map, we also planned it like clockwork. I lead it, Rasa and Miles (Bones) being cheif advisors as possible. Every one got to do Q&C, nothing left to chance but dumb luck. Which shot us in the toe.

Since I screwed up and took the wrong tactical aids and it was like 1min into it. We did it again, Rasa brought a time machine 8=( They put it to a vote. Rasa, Miles, and Wiz voted yes the rest refused. Oh well, I’m not much on the idea for me its strictly one shot john. We did it by the numbers and got shot in the toe before we got upstairs haha. After that as per tradition after a live op success or fail. We played it Killhouse style.

Same plan failed, so we tried dymanic for fun (my idea) without any iron clad formation (Rasas idea). The plan was basically to bang threw, see if we could clear it quickly and still reach the hostage. Wiz wasn’t happy with it, nore was I really but I figured we could use a break for a round. After he left Fox modified the plan for safety and we did it. After one round I left b/c it was getting late. To late to walk the dogs after typing this =/

Oh well maybe I can code before supper…

headaches

Sheesh, between mothers, school, and demos my head hurts !

Installed MOHAA just for fun while I downloaded the ArmA demo. Our DSL got upped to a 2.9MBps down / 322KBps up range just in time to Download from a slow server. The game looks good but I don’t know how well I can play it. Needless to say I think my video card is lower spec then older models. Geforce 6200 and a TV Tuner not what I had in mind, I wanted a Geforce 6600 at least but I got a pre-build :@

The game is nice, I hope there will be a way to have focus follows crosshair style movement it would be kinda nice. It also looks like a game where it pays to top off the ammo supply before moving out.

SAS Memories

SAS_Cpl_Spidey01, a personale history.

The first time I set foot in the ol’Training Grounds I remember following a SAS_Rct_Raptis around, A SAS_LCpl_Hollow and another LCpl_R some one where also on the server. That was roughly two years ago. I played on/off until I got serious maybe a few months before my Rct Tryout. I wasn’t yet sure if I liked RvS.

The next time I started playing on TG#1 I remember JB the cool guy with a AK47, Adze as ether LCpl or Cpl and a few other members. Bronco, DM, Count, Cobra, Blade, En4cer e.t.c. Some regular on the server by the name of Grayfox I think, thought me a few simple basics when we where on another Missions server. RvS was getting cool but I made friends in another game.

Later on I pop’d in when we had TG#1 and TG#2 going with RvS and one server was running Force on Force training (Advers HR/Pilot/Bomb). I hung around epecially amazed by SAS_Cpl’s Adze, Blade, and JB. Put in an app some months later, dropped away to join friends in another game awhile later. By this time I had an app in and was the only Non SAS member activly posting on the forums lol….

One day, I’ll never forget it no matter how hard. I remember Random and Coop were in the server. I was so excited to see how the LtCol and 1st LT played. They worked as a 2-Man element, other SAS and my self joining in from time to time. I was simply astonished by the way these two members played together so well. I started trying to mimic what I saw Coop do as #2 Cover man and it set my favorite duty. I’d usually try to find some one to give cover to and do my best. Awhile before I met Leon. Soon after I met Recon when Allystrike wa son the rotation. Not but least Matsuro 🙂

My next hop several months later, I remeber meeting a SAS_Trp_Wiz and SAS_Rct_Rand out of the blue. Wiz eventially got me and felt (Python) into some uber basic training. I spent a fair bit of time along side Rand who showed me a few things. I enjoyed very much when Rand and I did a tough map together working our way through the mud and tangos till we did it without rasing any alarms. I dropped for awhile for some league matches in MW4.

After some time I returned to RvS and Swat4 when it came out. At SAS_LCpl_Wizs’ advice I sent in a new app, I had cancled my origenal one b/c I had stopped playing RvS. I worked to improve my skill in hopes of being a decent applicant. The young SAS_Trp_Rand took me under his wing one day, showed me the basic training that I would need for passing a tryout. V-Coms, Movement, e.t.c. and helped me learn some Common Sense better then others did. During this time I spent most of my time training on TG#2 Iron Wrath with Rand, JB and Wiz and others hanging around. I played a good deal of S4 but I switched mostly to RvS so I could join faster. Blade got his Comp fixed and Wiz gave me TS Privs. British accents are nice. I soon got to know the members voices, ahh I remember wanting to strangle JB and Blade at first for confusing me. I wasn’t yet used to playing RvS with TS2 and there was plenty of jokes here and there at funny happenings on the server. Felt changed his name to Python and became a Rct.

Thanks to the fatherly guidence of a good Trooper and the faith of a new Cpl I took my troopers tryout and passed on the second try. Relish conducted it, Adze Soon the new Trooper Python was the perfect example, SAS_Cpl soon SAS_Sgt_Wiz a watchful mentor, SAS_Cpl_JB a nudging shadow when I needed guidence, SAS_Sgt_James my corrector, SAS_SSgt_En4cer a man of tactics, SAS_Cpl_Relish my Dynamic Instructor 🙂 I played more S4 and got to see alot more of CO Random but still kept around RvS and trained. SAS_Rct_Rasa and SAS_Rct_Leon aka “The Human Machine” where my training buddies. Around this period I noticed a few good lads. Coq_Rouge, Jso, SFC (aka Trp_Ghost), Fritz of Swat4, then another player we best know as Qwerty, and more I can’t remember everyone. I was hoping most of them (particually Coq & Fritz and later SFC) would put serious effort into becoming SAS members. During this time I know Taris and Moebious left.

Soon I became a Trooper, I worked hard to make my self the best I could be and still stuck around with my ol’training mates. Wiz was Sgt by now and I think Jay left around this time. One player I noticed really looked good was Coq_Rouge, I never knew if he had an app in but I liked his style. Soon enough in time Coq_Rouge became SAS_Rct_Rouge and then Trooper. Fritz became Rct but had to leave because of family matters. best damn Swat4 player I’ve ever seen when it came to covering. between the two of us, we could find an angle to cover any where. I sat in on several tryouts, attended some trainnig sessions led by James and Rand. I was generally a flounder as a Trooper IMHO. One day a greenish kid pops in to the server one Monday or so. He wanted a Tryout by Wednesday or Thursday. I tried to make sure he stayed out of trouble after he became serious. Soon he was SAS_Rct_Mando and made trooper after awhile. SFC changed his name to Ghost when he became Recruit IIRC. Dave came back from the dead Coop recruited Qwerty, Jso joined us and Qwerty left us. (to put it shortly). I met Darkwolf, SDSnipe, Sacer_Miles, Noer, and others. One day a man by the name of SJMerge dropped in on IG Olsons Estate. I was like WTH ether this guy was one of us or he’s like Green beret. Sure enough he was a SWAT officer home on pain meds from dential surgery and has never played so good again ! haha. I poke’d a bit for him to invistigate SAS and hoped very dearly he’d drop us an app. I was happy to see my friend Rasa become the first of us three stooges make JNCO (LCpl to yall). Eventially SJMerge,Hexen, Noer and Miles became Rct but much later on then this. Around this time after awhile LCpl_Rand dropp’d off the map. Some time in this period, Random stepped down and Heim became CO. Bronco left us and some AWOL members got took off the mighty page.

I met Lazkostriker and Foxthreat some time before or after but I was stopping to play S4 alot in the hopes of getting closer to training ops. Blade and JB became Sgts, I think some one must’ve sent GCHQ a few rounds of white russians because eventially Rouge, Leon, and Recon became LCpl and so did I. I resigned to the fact that I was given another chance, try and be helpful. I’ve done what I could. I lived to see desasitors strike. The “Sabre Incident” as I call it. Squabble between RSM_James, Capt_En4cer, SSM_Wiz, most of Sabre pissed. All three where demoted in the end, two trying self demotion /or resignation. GCHQ sorted it and things where water under the bridge. Shield had become CO a bit before this when Heim had stepped down. Mando left around this chuck of time requesting Vet from GCHQ and got it.

Fences mended and life continued. One day before or after Sabre our site got cracked and we fought back without sinking to there level – Heim even threatend to sick lawyers on him. You don’t want a Doctors lawyer after you !!!! That poor sods not coming back me thinks. Then one day a ruckus between the command structure aka the James incident. James was kicked out for disobeying Commanders orders about the Admin controls or some thing. Rand put forth his request to be removed from the roster after a few months abense. I don’t care to remeber or hear it put forward. Eventually this up roar ended in peace. One day Random made me cry, he went veteran. Noer became Trp, Fox and Lazko rcts soon enough Foxthreat was a Trooper. Blast him even as a new Rct he fitted in so well you’d hardly know he wasn’t born a [SAS] Trooper.

Wiz took care of the site, Shield kept order and joined the army and took care of liife while we grew stonger. Random returned, En4cer and Blade where home. We had a nice admin reform at a price of dear blood. I saw changes in the recruitment process and Sacer_Miles and Hexen become our gina pigs for testing it.

I saw my friends Leon and Rouge become Cpl and Recon go vet. Some one must have been drinking because I was asked to start learning about tryouts, after doing my first tryout I was promoted to Cpl soon after. I now work

Troubles with the site and idiots out to break into it caused problems, eventually the admins shut it down to stop attacks and Wiz rebuilt the site for us and eventually it was restored to working order.

This is as much of [SAS] history as I’ve lived through, more or less in cronological order with as many details as I can recal right now. I’ll probably edit in more if I remember it tonight, I also need to finish editing in my additions to my PC-BSD review before I post it in the PC-BSD Lounge.

Promotion

Well….. I’ve always been happy even has a hang around, a potential recruit, a recruit, a trooper, and a Lance Corpral /w the mighty [SAS]. Now they’ve gone and me me a Cpl. I hope I’m worth the faith they’ve shown.

Dang it now I’ve got to change all my ID and Signatures!

AAO 2.7 Released

Amercia’s Army Ops v2.7 has been released in two 1.6gb download parts. A number of bug fixes/revamped UI is expected (I’m looking forward to the situational awareness indicator). Revamped training mission, new vehicles/weapons including Up-Armoed Humvee’s, CROWS, AT4 and Javalin weapon systems. + 2 Coop missions.

I was hoping for a better show of Coop so [SAS] could day dream for a realistic game of AAO, but alas most AAO servers I’ve met team work in Vs. Play is only out of the hunt for more kills. (Boring). PErsonally I like a mission carried out in a realistic manor. I’d rather clear a hostage rescue map with 10 X-Rays then fight may way threw a fortress of 60 enemies.

Player Vs. Player can be fun but is rarly realistic, becahse no matter how much they reenforce realism in Advers gaming. Joe blow turkey can’t stand to play as a team and fight like a man if you paid him 2,000,000 points a second. Ever see bunny hoppers packing AT4’s or 30lbs packs? (playerswho jump up and down allot in CQB to avoid being shot=Bunny hopper) BF2 was kind enough to make it so they couldn’t shoot till they landed, but also made it so you can jump and chuck C4. (My favorite way of using it was to chuck it far over a wall onto an Op4 Pos). In AAO, we have side stepping. You engage a target and the side step to one side out of your LoF, they then side step back *accross your LoF* and magically evade more bullets when they just walked accross your 20 rounds of 5.56x45mm. I was trained you have no where to go, bastardo is shooting at you and your on the run. You move as fast as possible *ahead* of their line of fire. A very fast moving threat at short range can be hard to keep targeted if they are ahread of your LoF, I should know I’ve done enough Infighting in my time as a MechWarrior (although I was mostly a Sniper or Recon/Harasser pilot). It’s also very effective in RvS when you get in a really bad situation or just want to have fun with the instant 1 shot one kill ghost tangos !

Good training with the Wiz, Blade, the red rooster and some record setting attempts with Wiz, Rouge, and later Leon. About 1:30-2:10 we got on a dynamic hostage rescue. Usually one can do both hostages in about 5 minutes but we figured we’d waltz in 🙂

I love to try and beet speed records, I’ve always tried to be working at a bat out of heck speed in dynamic when ever it’s safe since my Recruit tryout. I had a great teacher, Relish. I learned that when the X-Rays know your coming and the hostages live is on the line. You go as fast as is safe, rapid movement, quick shooting, and short desisive violence of action. I’m sure the real world SAS could do it better but we tend to do things pretty well. I wish more teams online played with realistic tactics. In RvS, Coop is a joke on most servers. Generally on public servers people just puff a smoke grenade at the door, camp it and shoot the stupidfied tangos through smoke (Generic player). Totally unrealistic and the moronic way to lame your way through the game.

Smoke grenades are obscurents, not cover or room clearing aids. You puff a smoke to break line of site with the target and you usually don’t want to cross right behind it. Any machine gunner with a brain is gonna lite you up if you do. Our boys in Vietnam learned you don’t just smoke the street and run accross a killing zone.

A Flashbang is a less then lethel room clearing aid, it’s a stun grenade. It blows up with a intense light and a series of sharp “bangs” stunning and or disorienting people. You then poor into the room, size control and get away from the fatal funnel (the doorway) and along the walls for cover and set up the lines of fire to cover the entire room.

Some thing like this should work
____________________
<<

b
^ ^ <<
^______^______d___
d = Door openning
b = Bang landed
^/< = Assualters

Basicly the idea is you cover the whole room, keeping to corners/walls and you _do not_ have any one standing in the line of fire of anothe teammate. As you can see in my little diagram 2 assualters have the 12 o’clock and the 4 o’clocks general directions covered, they are along the walls (but not touching) so they won’t get flanked and shot in the back.

Now of course in real life a flashbang will hurt you if it goes off to close, in Swat4 it’s able to setoff pipe bombs on a shelf if it hits but doesn’t really do any damage. In my work for a mod for the game a flashbang going off on you will hurt allot, but it won’t kill (generally) which adds a bit more realism. In our games as long as Me, Fury, and Glock are not tossing the grenade your safe enough. I guess it’s what I get for not liking base ball as a kid, my stingball grenades tend to bounce back at us. (even virtual ALSG101 stingers hurt).

I love our PC Games because it gives us a chance to use tactics, we don’t “Smoke and clear” we “Bang and Clear” as a standard entry in dynamic. We do of course use Breaching Charges, Frags, Gas and Shotgun breaches alone and in combination but getting it doen safly can be a challenge. In SWAT4, allot of times I see pub’s stack up and say “Oy, that one is probably gonna die when the door opens”. Oh well would be nice if they’d learn linear and Column stacks and how to safly stack up. As we always tell the recruits when their training to join the clan. “Stack on the side of the door that will not expose you to immediate return fire when the door is opened” we also use Linear stacks most times, every one in a single line. #1 goes in, #2 goes in, #3 goes in, #4 goes in e.t.c. The idea being you don’t get #1/#2 on the left, #3/#4 ont he right side of the door. And then have #1 going in the room with his pants down while #2 and #3 are jammed in the door, both trying to get in because of lag or one being to slow. You want to get in quickly and safly !!!

I’ve seen to many 5 man pile ups at the door with public players. Hahahha I remember once after me and a team mate we’re harping on not clogging the door. My teammate the point man went in, #3 jumped me (I was #2), and #4 was trying to push us through the darn door while #5 fiddled. #1 was alone in the room and got flanked & downed, I got in and moved out. My team mates did the same thing at the next door with me as #5 and I was the only one to survive and complete the mission. Now if only SWAT4 was like RvS where idiots get shot fast.
